Making Sense Of Most Popular Social Media Platforms’ Algorithms.

Social media algorithms are what all social media platforms run on and they are ever evolving.

These algorithms filter, rank and organize the content we see based on a certain set of automated rules.

What does this mean for you?

As a marketer, it is part of our job to stay up to date. That’s why you’re reading this email too, right?

While it may be hard to understand exactly how they work, the least we can do is learn how to work with them.


Having a better understanding of the algos lets you optimize your content strategies and ad campaigns accordingly. Allowing you to reach out to the best possible audience with the right message at the right time. And hence, better results.

Let’s take a look at the inner workings of these platform-specific algorithms to understand how they work and what we can do better to thrive:

Inside the Facebook Algorithm:
Facebook has always prioritized creating meaningful conversations between friends and family. Here are some important signals that decipher this closely.

Facebook Signals:
– The timing of the content posted. Know when your audience hangs out the most on Facebook.
– The format in which the content is posted. You don’t need to be told how videos followed by contrasting images outrank almost all other forms of content.
– Engagements. Likes, Shares, Comments, Replies to comments and even the length of the comments weigh more.
– Content being shared privately by users over FB Messenger, which starts and builds the conversation.
– Average time spent by users interacting with your content.
– Brand Credibility. Consistent posts, with all the relevant information of your FB page filled out adds to brand credibility.
– Native Content. Try to keep your users within Facebook properties and use external links taking users out of Facebook sparingly.

PS: Stop asking people to “Like, Share & Comment” on your posts as it makes the algorithm mark it down.

Inside the Twitter Algorithm:
No small talk or beating around the bush, simply on-point content. That’s what Twitter is all about.

3 Sections that define how your tweets will be categorized.
– Ranked Tweets.
– In case you missed it.
– Rest of the tweets in reverse-chronological order.

Though users have the ability to disable the first 2 features, all they will see is tweets in reverse-chronological order. Hence, the timing of these tweets is the most critical factor.

Twitter Signals: 
– The timing of the tweet. Time your tweets to get the most engagements within the first few minutes of posting and it will be the most visible.
– Engagements. Like Facebook, each piece of content (tweet) is first served to a small group of people. And the user engagements (Hearts, Replies, Retweets) play a major role in reaching out to most people.
– The credibility of the users. Engagements from users with more followers outweigh others. Users see more from the people they already engage with. Also, if they visit someone’s profile often, they will see their content even before engaging with it.

Inside the LinkedIn Algorithm:
Like FB and Twitter, LinkedIn is no different. Apart from the usual stuff like engagements, fan following, page info and timing, what’s unique about LinkedIn?

2 things. First is Stories. LinkedIn gives more weight to your Stories and their performance within your network.

And the second is, well, if your Posts or Stories are performing well within your own network, believe it or not… LinkedIn has real human staff members opening up your best performing content to a wider audience outside of your network.

Inside the Instagram Algorithm:
Again, repetitive things aside, here’s what makes Instagram Algorithm stand out from the rest.

Instagram Signals:
– Content categories. Instagram ranks its posts for each user depending on the content categories they interact most with. For example, Pets, Fitness, Memes, Fashion etc.
– Hashtags. The more content you post with a particular set of categories and hashtags, the more Instagram likes it. Keep users engaged for as long as you can within that content category.
– DM’s. Content shared over direct messages and its interaction rate is given far more weight than general posts.

Did Twitter really start 2019 with an ad like this?

While everyone was celebrating Christmas and the New Year, some people never stopped the hustle. And a snoozing Twitter security system, helped them to make some grains for the holiday.

Did Twitter help them? Sort of. However, not on purpose.

The social media platform let someone promote an obvious PayPal phishing scam. Yes, a paid ad promoting a scam.

The account wanted to appear like a legitimate PayPal account and promoted an end-of-year sweepstakes event. To be in with a chance, all users had to do was to verify their details. Except, it was all a trap!

With some attention, one could understand it wasn’t really PayPal: HTTPS was lacking and the URL misspelt “PayPal” as “Paypall.”

The question we have in mind is: how in the world did Twitter allow this campaign to run? Probably, they were too focused sipping champagne for New Year’s.

Yet, this wasn’t the first time Twitter had such an issue. Anyone remember the days of Elon Musk offering crypto? Yep…

This means Twitter still has a weaker compliance team than Facebook. And that attracts a certain kind of advertiser.

The fun fact is that after they raised $50M, they replaced everything on their website with a meme…

What an elegant way to communicate to investors that they just threw money down the toilet.

But, after a couple of days the team updated everyone that their funds are safe and they are working on what they promised. That they did it all just for the viral effect.
